Number Bonds to 10

Timed practice test on number bonds to 10 — the essential foundation for mental arithmetic and early maths fluency.

What are number bonds to 10?

Number bonds to 10 are the pairs of numbers that add up to 10: 1+9, 2+8, 3+7, 4+6, 5+5, and so on — including 0+10 and 10+0. There are 11 pairs in total.

Knowing these instantly — without counting — is one of the most important early maths skills. It allows children to perform mental addition and subtraction quickly, and forms the basis for understanding place value, carrying, and later arithmetic.

Why instant recall matters

There's a significant difference between being able to work out a number bond and knowing it automatically. When a child has to think "what goes with 7 to make 10?", that cognitive load slows down any calculation that depends on it. When the answer comes instantly, attention is free for the harder parts of the problem.

Research consistently shows that fluency in number bonds to 10 (and to 20) predicts later success in arithmetic. It's a small set of facts with outsized importance.

How the practice test works

tapbytap presents number bond questions one at a time. The test is timed so you can track how quickly you answer — speed is a proxy for how automatic the recall is. Scores are saved for registered users, so you can watch your time drop as the facts become more ingrained.
